Socks: Serenity / Pyroclastic / Widdershins

Now that they are finally finished, I thought I'd write up the pattern for the socks from my Knitting in Kauai / Second Sock, Second Time posts. I named these "Serenity / Pyroclastic / Widdershins" because ...

Serenity is the yarn — Deborah Norville Collection Serenity Sock yarn. Pyroclastic is the source of the lace pattern. Widdershins is the source of the heel.

Here are a few photos of the finished socks.

As mentioned, the lace pattern is from Pyroclastic socks by Marlowe Crawford (Knitty, Winter 2009). Here's one of her photos showing the lovely lace pattern.

The heel is from Widdershins socks by Brooke Chenoweth Creel from Knitty, Summer 2006. This technique for a toe-up sock results in a heel that looks just like a classic top-down sock's heel flap. (Quite ingenious!) Here's one of her photos. (In addition to showing the heel beautifully, this photo illustrates one of the things I love about toe-up socks: you can try them on as you go!)

Now for my Serenity / Pyroclastic / Widdershins socks pattern.

Size: These socks fit me. I usually wear a shoe size 9½B or 10B. My foot is 10-in long and measures 9-in around at the ball of the foot and 8½-in around at the narrowest part of my ankle.

Yarn: 2 skeins of Deborah Norville Collection Serenity Sock yarn. Color: Thyme (DN104)
Needles: 2.50 mm and 2.00 mm DPs

With size 2.50 mm needles, cast on 20 stitches using Judy's Magic Cast On.

Toe:
Following Judy's Magic Cast On instructions, increase 4 stitches every other round until 56 st total. Work one more increase round increasing at 4 locations as previously PLUS increasing 1 stitch at the center of the top side of the sock. [Total=61 st.]

Foot:
Work lace pattern on top 35 stitches and stockinette stitch on bottom 26 stitches (sole). The lace pattern (written out and chart) can be found about 1/3 of the way down the Pyroclastic socks instructions. For the top 35 stitches, work the 11 stitch lace pattern 3 times then work 2 purl stitches. When sock measures 3 inches less than length of foot, begin gusset increases. (In my case, this was after 4 repeats of the lace pattern.)

The gusset, heel turn and heel flap are all from Brooke Chenoweth Creel's Widdershins socks (modified slightly to work with this sock pattern).

Gusset:
R1 — Top: Work in lace pattern. Sole: k1, m1, knit to 1 before last sole stitch, m1, k1. [Top=35 st; Sole=28 st; Total=63 st]
R2 — Top: Work in lace pattern. Sole: knit
Repeat 6 times. [Top=35 st; Sole=40 st. For me, the top was R1 & R2 of the lace pattern on the 6th repeat .]
Next round — Top: Work in lace pattern (R3 for me). Sole: k1, m1, k19, m1, k19, m1, k1. [Top=35 st, Sole=43 st, Total=78 st]
Last gusset round — Top: Work in lace pattern (R4 for me). Sole (end at center): k20, pm, k1 (center sole stitch, abbreviated "CtrSS" below), pm

Turn heel:
Having just marked the center sole stitch (CtrSS)...
R1 — Work 7 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1, k1, w&t (as per Widdershins instructions)
R2 — Work 7 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1p, p1, w&t (see Widdershins instructions for m1p)
R3 — Work 5 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1, k1, w&t
R4 — Work 5 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1p, p1, w&t
R5 — Work 3 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1, k1, w&t
R6 — Work 3 stitches passed the CtrSS, m1p, p1, w&t
R7 — Work 1 stitch passed the CtrSS, m1, k1, w&t
R8 — Work 1 stitch passed the CtrSS, m1p, p1, w&t
[Sole=51 st]
Work 1 round over all stitches (for me this was R5 of lace pattern on top) ending at CtrSS and picking up wraps (as per Widdershins instructions)

Heel flap:
The heel flap is worked over the center back 25 stitches plus 1 stitch on each side.
Preparation: Continue working in st st for 12 stitches beyond the CtrSS, ssk, turn (do not wrap stitch)
Next Row [WS]: slip 1, p25 [12, CtrSS, 12], p2 tog, turn
Next Row [RS]: [slip 1, k1] 13x, ssk, turn
Repeat the above 2 rows 11 times. Do not turn after last RS row. [Sole/Heel flap=28 st]
Next rounds ("NR"):
Note that I picked up the lace pattern on the sole/heel flap on NR4 below. This can be adjusted.
NR1 — Work across top (for me, R6 of lace pattern), after 3rd repeat of lace pattern, p1, p2tog tbl (last stitch of top and first stitch of heel flap. Knit to CtrSS. [Sole/Heel flap=27 st]
NR2 — Knit 12 stitches beyond CtrSS, p2tog (last stitch of heel flap and first stitch of top). Work across top (for me, R7 of lace pattern) counting p2tog as first stitch of top. After 3rd repeat of lace pattern, p1, p2tog tbl (last stitch of top and first stitch of heel flap. Knit to CtrSS. [Sole/Heel flap=25 st]
NR3 — Knit 11 stitches beyond CtrSS, p2tog (last stitch of heel flap and first stitch of top). Work across top (for me, R8 of lace pattern) counting p2tog as first stitch of top. After 3rd repeat of lace pattern, p1, p2tog tbl (last stitch of top and first stitch of heel flap. Knit 10 st. Re-set end of round marker. [Sole/Heel flap=23 st]
NR4 — P1, p2tog. Work st 3-11 of lace pattern (for me, R9). P2tog (last stitch of heel flap and first stitch of top). Work across top in lace pattern counting p2tog as first stitch of top. After 3rd repeat of lace pattern, p1, p2tog tbl (last stitch of top and first stitch of heel flap). Work st. 3-11 of lace pattern.
[55 st total]

Leg:
Continue in lace pattern. Work rounds 10-12. Then work full repeats of 12 round lace pattern until leg reaches desired length. (I worked 5 full repeats.)

Cuff:
Switch to size 2.00 mm needles.
Work 11 st rib pattern as follows: p2, k2, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k2. Repeat 4 times (to end of round marker).
Work 12 rounds of rib pattern.
Bind off using Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. Weave in ends.
